Savio Engineering part of new home for stingrays at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium

The completion of Shedd Aquarium’s “Stingray Touch” experience marks a occasion for Savio Engineering, a New York-based water feature manufacturer.

To date, the project — at the most visited aquarium in the United States — is the largest scale project that Savio products has been involved.

The exhibit, which opened at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, earlier this spring, offers an interactive experience for visitors to observe and touch stingrays in an open water exhibit.

Constructed atop an existing outdoor terrace, four Savio skimmer/filters were cast into the pool wall that is home to the stingrays.

William Gamble, a principle with Nevin Hedlund Architects, Inc. worked in conjunction with Shedd’s design team over six months to complete the project.

Based in River Forest, Ill., Hedlund Architects was previously involved in the aquarium’s projects including the “Jelliesspecial exhibit, the renovation of the “Amazon Rising Exhibit” and “Local Waters Exhibit.”
